So you’ve been tasked with delivering a digital project.
Perhaps it’s a large content-managed website for your organization. Perhaps it’s a web application or a mobile app for your business. Maybe you need to evaluate and hire an agency, or maybe you’re tasked with leading an internal development team. Regardless, the successful delivery of the project is ultimately your responsibility.
That’s risky. And don’t just take our word for it. In 2012, the University of Oxford conducted a study based on over 5,000 IT projects. What did they find?
On average, large IT projects run 45% over budget and 7% over time while delivering 56% less value than predicted. Software projects run the highest risk of cost and schedule overruns.
Yeah… that’s a little scary.

The best part? Even if you follow just a few of these steps – say, create a project brief, and write some user personas – you’ll be ahead of the game. Those items can be included in your procurement process, if you’re hiring an agency, or they can be provided to your internal team as a starting point.
If you take it even further and create user stories with acceptance criteria as well as information architecture, user journeys, and pencil & paper prototypes, your production team will be able to effectively estimate on the work. Better yet, you’ll be confident in knowing that what is being estimated on is what should be built – and due diligence has been done.
